A “Plutonian” person is an individual who has a very strong influence from Pluto. This influence comes in many forms but it almost always manifests in certain specific patterns. This is a different concept than being a Scorpio or having “Scorpionic” influences.
Here are some of the forms in which Pluto may cast its influence over an individual in their lifetime
- strong aspects with one of the personal planets (Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars)
- strong aspects with one of the angles (Midheaven, Imum Coeli, Ascendant, Descendant)
- placement in one of the cardinal houses: first, fourth, seventh and tenth
- by any combination of all of the above, ex: Pluto conjunct Sun in the First house, also conjunct Ascendant.
When any of the placement occurs in one individual natal chart we may expect extreme behavior and a deep, transformation encounter. “Plutonians” are by definition obsessed, but not to be fooled by the pejorative meaning of the term: obsession can also mean the ability to focus on a certain goal for long periods of time. When a Plutonian set himself / herself up to something, the forces summoned are almost irresistible. One way of another, the goal will be reached. In the process, most likely someone will be hurt, sometimes even the initiator, the Plutonian himself. Collateral damage, will think the Plutonian and he / she will continue as nothing happened.
It can be quite difficult to get along with a Plutoniain because stubbornness is their second nature. And it’s not that childish, playful stubbornness as you see in Taurus or Aries, for instance, it’s that deep, penetrating stubbornness that says “I’m going to stay with this matter until it’s solved. Period. End of file.” A conflictual encounter with a Plutonian will most likely cause a lot of harm, especially if you try to appeal to reason. If you’re lucky enough to just acknowledge and follow on instead of trying to take the lead in the relationship (big mistake) then you can be in a for the treat of your life. The roller-coaster feeling you get when you’re swept away by a Plutonian is hard to forget. But even if the relationship will be pricey in terms of emotional damage the healing effect is always guaranteed. Whatever you will lose in such an encounter is not useful anymore. It’s your clinging on that gives you the impression you’re losing something whereas you’re just carrying away unnecessary weight. Pluto is very good at cleaning up and throwing away the garbage. It almost never asks you if you agree with that and has this nasty habit of doing it when you’re least expecting, but the long term influences are always good. You will be transform and reborn.
The name Pluto derives from the Greek word “Pluton” meaning wealth. There has been some confusion as to whether Plutus, god of wealth, was the same personage as Hades or Pluto, the lord of death and the underworld. In his authoritative book The Greek Myths (Vol. I), Robert Graves says, “Hades is styled Pluton, or Pluto, ‘The Rich One”. Since the precious metals used in the currency which forms the basis of the world’s economy are mined from the depths of the earth, Pluto appears to have been correctly named on both counts. Pluto is also associated with gangsters of the underworld who rob and kill for money, as well as with the basic physiological and psychological resources controlled by the unconscious mind. When Pluto contacts a planet or point in the natal chart it seems to deepen and intensify those things that that planet represents. Pluto is not only the significate of secrets and hidden things in general but is also responsible for the uncovering and surfacing of whatever had been buried. And the longer it will take, the greater the effort to keep them concealed, the more devastating the consequences when they do surface but also the greater the potential for self-transformation.
If Pluto is part of your natal astrological chart’s planetary dominants you are said to be Plutonian. You may feel like a foreigner who does not belong in this world with its laws, creeds and its concerns. The rules in society are not necessarily yours. You are interested in what is unknown and the subtle laws of the “Hidden Order”. So you take malicious pleasure in ridiculing the patterns you find too simplistic or too rigid. You may also revel in underlining the limits of explanations you deem too common. There is something unconventional about the way that you are, the way you think and the way you act. What is your specificity made of? Is it an extraordinary partner? A life off the beaten path? Or do you distance yourself from conventional society? You may come from nowhere, and don’t belong to a particular group. You cannot be simplified in order to conform to existing models. The gap between you and the ordinary is the element of your strength. Your deep clear-sightedness firstly enables you to put things into perspective and to grant them the attention they deserve. Your other remarkable asset is your capacity to intervene from behind the scenes. To secretly organize events and bring forth desirable outcomes without seeming to impose or to dictate anything outwardly. You must though however still overcome one of the major difficulties of this dominant which is to get people to accept your difference and to smoothly fit into your existence.
Enigmatic and paradoxical, Plutonians function subversively and invisibly to transform by elimination and metamorphosis. Plutonians operate with extreme power and when manifesting it can cause them to be frightened and out of control. Pluto causes hidden and subterranean states to break forth and erupt. Pluto has rulership over volcanoes from which molten lava erupts, destroying everything in its path. But later the lava helps build a rich soil for plant growth. Like earthquakes and volcanoes Pluto brings about a climax in the life with much disturbance and upheaval that is followed by calmer and more wholesome circumstaces. This may occur in daily affairs or in the emotional responses. Pluto is very often the planet of the “healing crisis”.
Pluto is connected to breakdown and decay so it is also connected to those elements of society that reflect breakdown and decay. This is the source of Pluto’s association with underworld elements, organized crime, and people who are so socially disaffected that they represent a threat to society. The socially disaffected are only a manifestation of Pluto’s power. Though criminals and terrorists seem to be what destroys society they are merely the agents by which the destructive power already inherent in the situation manifests. They are not the source of the destruction and even if they were eliminated something else would replace them as agents of that power.
Plutonian people also take on the positive role of assisting others who are going through Plutonian transformations. Pluto is also associated with healers and therapists, both psychological and physical, and those whose who teach techniques of self-transformation. Plutonians may also appear as religious or spiritual leaders who stress rebirth after death – either literal or psychological. Therapists, healers, gurus, spiritual leaders, and the like are the most positive Plutonians of all because they are most in touch with the central theme of Pluto, the death and rebirth of the soul. Since Pluto is the higher octave of Mars, there must be a transcendence of desires (physical, material, emotional) for inner illumination and spiritual enlightenment to take place. When Pluto contacts a planet or point in the natal chart, it seems to deepen and intensify those things that that planet represents. Pluto is not only the significate of secrets and hidden things in general but is also responsible for the uncovering and surfacing of whatever had been buried. And the longer it will take, the greater the effort to keep them concealed, the more devastating the consequences when they do surface but also the greater the potential for self-transformation.
In terms of personality traits of a “Plutonian” they would generally be described as intense, deeply intuitive, perceptive, provocative (for better or worse), and able to see things and situations in ways that many others do not. Negative manifestations can go in any one extreme or another: some can be power-hungry, obsessive, sadistic, manipulative, prone to violence, etc.
Plutonian people are intense. Much too intense for other people a lot of the time. It doesn’t seem to matter much on the intensity level whether the aspect is considered positive or negative, or how well integrated the energy is. It scares people. Pluto people don’t shy from seeing and talking about issues that are very uncomfortable to people. Even if they keep their mouth shut, there is a lot of strong emotional projection from the Pluto person and people can sense it. If a PP walks into a room, unless the PP is being very careful not to attract attention- that person is noticed by almost all others in the room. An emotional and personal energy projection.
I think what frightens people are two things. One, they sense that the PP will sometimes go through hell if need be to accomplish what they want. The good and the bad, with or without ethical or social considerations. If someone is not good at sizing people up then they might assume the worst and only see ruthlessness. But most PPs incorporate a lot of social and ethical considerations into their desired outcomes anyway. Secondly, the PPs can often size people up fairly well and can see exactly what it is the other person wants to conceal about themselves. Yes, deep intuitions. And I think when they do, the other person knows it on some level and it scares the heck out of them. Most people are a little terrified of transformation. But most PPs I know like it.
I think natal Pluto is amongst the most difficult of forces and dynamics to consciously embody and integrate into the personality. For example, the symbol of Pluto can be very strongly placed in a person’s chart yet they may not in the course of their daily lives demonstrate Plutonic qualities and attributes. What are plutonic qualities and attributes ? I see Pluto symbolizing, amongst other things the deeper genetic current of our nature. The vast intelligence and powerful influence of DNA. I think women who bear children automatically become more Plutonic simply by having participated in the Plutonic shock of childbirth. Pluto relates to Hades, Lord of Death and the Underworld. Those who have survived near-death experiences I think also become by default more Plutonic. To become more Plutonic means to have absorbed the shock of impermanence that nothing lasts and nobody lives forever. To live with the constant awareness of impermanence is to live a transformative or Plutonic life. As one becomes transformed one also becomes the transformer. Whoever becomes catalyzed also becomes a catalyst. The Plutonic shocks we absorb can either immobilize us or turn us into conduits for the transmission of these shocks to the world of others. We know who we are. Whatever does not kill us does make us stronger and often even stranger. Anyone embodying Plutonic qualities often appears as a stranger — and sometimes, a threatening stranger — to the greater populace still asleep inside the notion that they will live forever.
All Plutonian experiences are intense; it involves intense sensations; pain, insecurity, deprivation then followed by pleasure, fulfilment, relief, etc., the list goes on. Plutonian experiences involve change. Births are like that; in that even if there is little trauma involved with the birthing process; life is surely not the same with one more human life to contend with. Thirdly Plutonian experiences involve high stakes; something of great value to the person undergoing it; it could mean the risk of life or loss of something or someone; the giving and gaining of power, love, etc. Plutonian people are created from a deep wounding. The deep, soul shattering wounding happens when we are still an infant, maybe even before we are born. Plutonian people are born into plutonian environment. Most of the time, the Plutonian child was not wanted or planned. There is usually a deep sense of resentment, negligence or family secret tied to Plutonian children. The Plutonian child usually stands for something which the family refuses to face. The energy of it all is felt when we are still in the womb. The wounding is usually in the nature of very early emotional, physical abandonment, power struggles, sexual and physical abuse. The most painful part of it all is the perpetrator of these energies is done by the same people who were to look after and nurture us. This makes the wounding cut that much deeper and felt that much sharper.
Plutonian are born hardwired with a built in defense system. The system detects bullshit, lying and can cut through the deep motivations and intentions of people’s hearts. Most of the time this defense system does not sit well with the Plutonian environment of the broken and the neglected child; so in order to survive the child learns to hide their true feelings and senses and learns to either suppress them or use them to create a whole inner realm which they can only escape to.
The energy is contained within the child’s inner realm can become too intense. The intensity can be best explained by understanding what Pluto stands for. In Greek Mythology Pluto is ruled by Hades- god of the underworld. It rules intense power struggles in all areas of life either sexual domination or suppression. Sex is seen as a tool for Plutonians, not to mention plays into much of the power struggles in relationships. Death in the literal, emotional, psychological and spiritual levels is seen as the much needed energy of transformation and healing. Life and death are seen as “one” by Plutonian folks. With all the darkness of the energy also comes with the redemption of healing and transforming and using the power granted by Pluto for positive means. A child that is not allowed to own and express their Plutonian power has a higher risk of being taken over by these intense energies with a deep sense of pain, isolation and depression because as they grow up these energies that are still not understood and accepted by society and families.
Most Plutonians have a deep thought process and can sense and detect what really lies underneath anything. Because of the laser like intensity to be able to see things what it is and accept it without any hindrances. Plutonians have very few friends. But the friends they do have matter. Plutonions exude intensity, unspoken allure and sexuality. In relationships they will always play with power struggles in all facets, however if the intentions of the partner are seen by the Plutonian as caring and honest Plutonions can learn to share their power and even learn to accept their partners power. Intuition and even psychic ability can run deep within a Plutonian and they are always confronted with the need for intimacy yet afraid of losing their autonomy.
Plutonians need for intimacy and autonomy creates inner conflict. From a young age; there will always be the lure of belonging to a group; to be understood and accepted but almost always the environment is unwilling to accept the intense probing and truth revealing behaviors of Plutonians. As the famous Swiss psychologist Carl Jung stated that one can really never be part of a group and be an individual. One must choose. Carl Jung was a Moon opposite Pluto, one of the most intense lunar placements. Betrayal and trust are the same sides of a coin for Plutonians. Not disclosing information is seen as betrayal. Trust is always earned. Plutonians are the most loyal once they deem you trustworthy.
The most interesting challenge for Plutonians is whether or not they can heal their past and inner wounding to ultimately learn to use the Plutionian energy to help others and themselves. If they may heal themselves they can also help others heal. Because if this ability power is usually given to a developed Plutonian. This can be a life calling if one is able to break free from their inner demons. Many Plutonians are healers, doctors and shamans and psychoanalytical psychologists.
Pluto represents a much higher spiritual principle. It is a type of light that ultimately serves to guide society. A purifying mechanism that shocks and removes elements which do not serve its spiritual evolution.
It is reflective of death-like processes where a person undergoes a very difficult, no holds barred change process, with the destination being a radical overhaul of the personality. This makes us deal with our worst fears and everything we have avoided dealing with as a result of these. This process can be more constructive in return charts and transits, however can be more problematic as an ingrained, constant element in the personality in which case it deeply complicates the personality and can introduce a certain unwholesome quality. In a more spiritually oriented chart the Plutonian process can be extremely beneficial to the soul.
Pluto influences within a personality give a lot of natural power, fearlessness, ruthlessness, desensitizing to anything but their goals, whatever these may be. It brings a deep, all-around transformative touch. It bestows extremism, a tendency for overkill, and often unconscious destructive tendencies in its natives, especially in those who do not embrace his goals consciously. True Plutonians are people who seek to prod society into transformation, and often not taking a no for an answer.( I absolutely think this is beautiful).
Since Pluto is the higher octave of Mars, there must be a transcendence of desires (physical, material, emotional) for inner illumination and spiritual enlightenment to take place. As a result the astrological mechanism which measures the fundamental correspondences between man and the universe has had to be speeded up. This adaptation to the tempo of the times has been accomplished by the introduction of new gears capable of distributing the effects of the unprecedentedly potent energies now reaching this planet from cosmic sources. These larger, more powerful gears are Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
Whatever Pluto does is irrevocable. The individual who has undergone a Plutonian metamorphosis can never return to his old way of doing things more than a butterfly can retreat into the chrysalis and become a worm again. People in this age of dying traditions may miss the solid security of an era when everybody crawled slowly along the ground but for better or worse they must spread their wings and take flight. Owing to the eccentricity of its orbit Pluto’s progress through the zodiac is markedly irregular. It traverses some signs in only thirteen years, but requires thirty-two years to make its way through others. Its average transit through a sign takes about twenty-four years. Thus, slow-paced Pluto refers to the basic attitudes of an entire generation more than to individuals.
Pluto has been identified with Lucifer, the fallen angel, Son of the Morning Star whose name means “Light Bearer.” This comparison is suggested by the fact that Pluto is the farthest planet from the Sun, banished to the darkest, most distant edge of the solar system. Consequently, Pluto often refers to banishment and has a way of bringing things to a halt. Plutonian personalities are apt to be “loners” who feel set apart from their fellow-men and women. Sometimes they are dictators, racketeers or revolutionaries who operate through the militant force of Mars while they themselves remain hidden and mysterious. Even when they take their stand on the side of the forces of light, they hold themselves aloof because they know that their influence can work more potently behind the scenes than in the open, and with less fear of reprisals.
Lucifer’s diabolic reputation stems from the tendency to consider both sex and money as the root of all evil. Yet both are creative powers which must ultimately be raised and redeemed. Where the other planets travel no more than eight degrees north or south of the ecliptic, Pluto moves approximately seventeen degrees above and below the apparent path of the Sun. Thus, Pluto falls far lower than the other planets, as though to tap the forces of the nether regions, and then ascends to corresponding heights in order to elevate these forces to a more exalted level. These extremes of behavior are also characteristic of Pluto-ruled Scorpio. Both planet and sign are associated with the Kundalini Energy or “serpent power” of the Hindu yogis. Since Scorpio is a feminine sign, and Kundalini is depicted as a goddess they can be seen as the intertwining of both very powerful and transformative energies brought together to achieve oneness. The Kundalini Awakening is the final transformation where the soul is purified and released from the constraints of this material world and is liberated into the soul realms. It dies and is reborn. Typical Pluto energy displayed on earth and in a human capsule.
The association of Pluto with war, dictatorship, regimentation. and death does scant justice to its real nature. Once human beings learn to control the root forces of sex and money, then aggression and oppression will cease, The destruction of bodies will no longer be regarded as an effective way of eliminating enemies. When Pluto finally comes into its own death will be regarded as the release of the soul which is no longer exiled to the outermost boundaries of the physical universe, is permitted to return to its source and to know itself once more as the original Son of Light.
For all of us Plutonian People who change the world through our soul’s transformation.
