Stu Unger
Mercury in Sagittarius is the Bookie. People with this placement tend to have a broad-minded, optimistic, and enthusiastic approach to learning and communication. They have a thirst for knowledge and love to explore new ideas, cultures, and ways of thinking. They are excellent storytellers and have a knack for making complex ideas easy to understand.
However, the downside of having Mercury in Sagittarius is that people with this placement can be prone to exaggeration, overconfidence, and a lack of attention to detail. They may have a tendency to jump to conclusions or make assumptions without gathering all the facts. They can also be prone to foot-in-mouth syndrome, saying things without thinking them through.
Stu Unger was an inspiration if you were in the Poker World in the 1970’s.80″s and 90’s. I was! Stu was known for Tight aggression and attacking player’s weak or tight ranges. he’s attributed as having made some absurd call-downs, like random ten-high calls beating five-high bluffs, “He’d tell players what hand they have just by the way they played the flop. Then of course bluff cause if he knows their hand they assume he can beat it if he’s raising.
Several of Ungar’s financial backers have commented that he could have earned an immeasurable amount more over his career had he been more of a “hustler”, giving his opponents the false belief they could beat him and thus be willing to risk more money trying. However, Ungar wanted to beat his opponents as soundly as possible, and he often insulted those whose skills he felt were inferior to his own. If Ungar had a large stack, he was deadly. Ungar’s prodigy-level IQ and total recall contributed to his blackjack card counting abilities, which were so sharp that he was frequently banned from playing in casinos; he was eventually unable to play blackjack in Las Vegas or anywhere else. He was a pure-talent player.
Perhaps he was the best, but even if he was, and I know he was I will always believe his achievements and his spirits inspired those that he knew and those that came after.
