Human beings are evolved in connection with the Earth’s energy. We walked barefoot and we slept in contact with the Earth never realizing that its surface contained limitless, natural healing energy. But walking around barefoot is not our main mode of travel any longer. We live primarily indoors much of the time and when we do walk or run outside we wear rubber soled shoes which prevent our feet from being able to absorb the Earth’s subtle energy. Rubber is not conductive, but our bodies are!
So here we find ourselves in a civilized and modern world but disconnected from a primal and powerful source of energy and healing. See, the Earth is basically a six sextillion metric ton battery that is continually replenished by solar radiation, lightning and heat from its deep-down molten core. The natural rhythmic pulsation of energy flowing through and emanating from the surface of the Earth keep the biological machinery and global life running in rhythm and balance and that includes you! Unfortunately we live like cut flowers, detached from the nourishing Earth’s energy. Earthing, also known as grounding, is simply reconnecting to the Earth’s healing energy.
Anyone who knows me knows how much I value grounding. It is becoming more and more important in our fast paced world. So how do we ground? It’s quite simple and you’ve been doing it most of your life without even realizing it. Walking barefoot in the grass, sand or dirt or even on concrete. Like your body these are all conductive surfaces and the Earth’s energy flows through them and into your body. Wood, asphalt and vinyl are not conductive though.
Why should you ground? In recent years inflammation has come to the forefront of medical attention and has been recognized as the leading trigger of chronic pain and most major health disorders including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer’s and cancer. All roads to chronic disease lead through inflammation. Bodies are on fire. Earthing appears to extinguish the flames through the transfer of negatively-charged electrons from the surface of the Earth into the body where they neutralize positively-charged destructive free radicals involved in chronic inflammation. The Earth’s energy makes the ground beneath our feet an extremely effective and abundant antioxidant. And it’s free. No pills. No prescriptions. All you have to do is reconnect. The Earth is like a gigantic battery that contains a natural, subtle electric charge—a special kind of energy present in the ground. For safety and stability, most everything in the electrical world is connected to it, whether it is an electric power plant or your refrigerator. That’s what the term “grounded” means.
Being grounded also applies to people. When you are electrically grounded, you feel:
- Centered
- Solid
- Strong
- Balanced
- Less tense
- Less stressed
Overall, you feel good. If you have pain, you have less of it, or maybe none at all, when grounded.
You are a bioelectrical being living on an electrical planet. Your body operates electrically. All of your cells transmit multiple frequencies that run, for example, your heart, immune system, muscles, and nervous system.
With the exception of humans living in industrialized societies, all living things on our planet are connected to the ground’s electric energy. In industrialized societies, you rarely go barefoot outside or wear natural leather shoes that allow you to absorb the ground’s energy. For many decades, people have increasingly been wearing rubber and plastic-soled shoes that act as a barrier to the Earth’s energy, insulating them from electrical contact with the Earth. People also generally don’t sleep on the ground anymore, as many cultures have done throughout history. They live and work above the ground, even far above the ground in high-rises.
While the research on grounding is relatively new, the practice is timeless. Past societies went barefoot or wore leather footwear made from hides that allowed the energy from the Earth to rise up into their bodies. They were grounded.
Here’s the bottom line: You have lost your electrical roots, so to speak. You’re disconnected, and this disconnection may be a seriously overlooked cause of human pain and discomfort and the steeply rising incidence of chronic illness worldwide.
The good news is, you can reconnect. Weather and schedule permitting, go barefoot for a half-hour or so outside and see what a difference that makes on your pain or stress level. Sit, stand, or walk on soil, grass, sand, or concrete. These are all conductive surfaces from which your body can draw the Earth’s energy. Wood, asphalt, and vinyl are not conductive.
Ideally, you want to sustain the Earthing experience and make it a part of your daily routine.
Earthing Outdoors
Earthing Outdoors is easy. Find a park or trail or even make your way to your own backyard. Just touch your bare fee to the grass or for maximum effect plunge your feet into the dirt or med for at least thirty minutes. You can also walk barefoot at the beach and notice how fast the stress and any pain you are experiencing leave you. Your energy will also improve. Outdoor Earthing helps also with the removal of unwanted imprints and excess energy in the solar plexus by using the Earth’s own electromagnetic force to pull energetic toxins-physical and energetic from your chakra system through the lower sacral chakras. When your bare feet or skin comes in contact with the earth, free electrons are taken up into the body. The Earth is a conductor or free electrons and so are all living things on the planet, including us. The body is composed of mostly of water and minerals which in combination are excellent conductors of electrons from the Earth providing there is direct skin contact or some other conductive channel for them to flow through.

To add to this we are also bathed in a sea of un-natural man-made electronic radiation from household appliances, mobile phones, wi-fi, microwaves and cell towers, which bombard us continuously with excess free radical damage to our tissues and cells. Go barefoot outside for at least half-hour and see what a difference it makes on your pain or stress level. Sit, stand, lay or walk on grass, sand, dirt, or plain concrete. These are all conductive surfaces from which your body can draw the Earth’s energy. Wood, carpet, asphalt, sealed or painted concrete and vinyl won’t work and will block the flow of electrons as they are not conductive surfaces.
