ESP: Extrasensory Perception
Have you ever answered a phone call only to hear the person you were just thinking of on the other end? Ever had a dream about something that later actually happened? Ever felt like somebody read your mind? Some people may interpret these sorts of experiences as extrasensory perception, or ESP. ESP is defined as an awareness of the world that occurs through some mechanism other than the known senses such as mind reading, sensing when someone at a distance may be in trouble, foreseeing the future, and other remote phenomena. These experiences can be known as the ideas of ESP or Extrasensory Perception
Extrasensory perception or ESP refers to the reception and processing of information not obtained through the physical senses but are sensed by through an individual’s mind. This term was coined by renowned psychologist J.B Rhine. It has been used to refer to psychic abilities and temporal operation. It is also known as The Sixth Sense.
Types of Extra Sensory Perception
Precognition
Precognition refers to the ability to see the future. Though the scientific community generally rejects precognition because of the lack of demonstration, many scientific explanations are available to explain it. Experiments conducted by the Parapsychology Laboratory at Duke University show the human mind has a habit along with the ability to subconsciously predict an outcome of events by judging current circumstances. Such predictions if they later become true are then related to precognition. Nostradamus was one of the most famous people known for his predictions as he has reportedly predicted several events throughout history that occurred long after his death.
Retrocognition
Retrocognition refers to the ability to see in the distant past. It can be as simple as recognizing a place, or a person, or somehow knowing what happened in a certain situation one had nothing to do with at the time it took place. When someone experiences déjà vu, it could be a simple instance of retrocognition. Someone who has retrocognition abilities could possibly ne experiencing something that has happened in the past in the present.
Telepathy
Telepathy refers to the ability to read and other persons thoughts. Telepathy allows a person to communicate with one or more people using their mind and no other sensory input. If you’ve ever become so close to someone you can tell what they’re thinking, you may not be a telepath, but you can understand the idea behind this particular type of ESP.
Clairvoyance
Clairvoyance refers to the ability to see objects or events that are happening to someone else. Similar to telepathy clairvoyance refers to the ability to gain knowledge about a person, event, or thing without sensory input. Though typically thought to be strongest during meditation. Many psychics can percieve information about the past, present and future in a variety of environments.
Clairaudience
Clairaudience refers the ability to hear objects or events that are happening to someone else without any other additional sensory information. Like clairvoyance clairaudience is thought to be strongest during meditation however many clairaudients can obtain information in a variety of environments they are exposed to.
Clairsentience
Clairsentience refers to the ability to perceive a feeling throughout the whole body without any stimulation related to the feeling or information. Some people with this ability may also be considered Clair-Empaths as they can physically tune into other people, places, or animal’s emotional experiences. This is considered a type of telepathy that allows emotions to be felt. This comes from a persons ability to tune into the vibration and feel the aura of another human being.
Mediumship
Mediumship refers to the ability to communicate with the dead by channeling their spirits. Most mediums use a variety of types of ESP, including clairvoyance and clairaudience to obtain their information. There are several types of Mediums. Open Channels who cannot turn off their gifts, Direct Channels, those that channel directly through Guides or Portal and the Trans-Mediums who allow the spirit to enter their bodies directly to communicate. This would be considered Physical Mediumship whereby the person uses their body to transmute the information coming in to them.
Clairalience
A secondary form of ESP is clairalience refers to the psychic ability to smell. While all humans have the ability to smell, this type of ESP refers to aromas that are not detected by everyone else. It is thought that these aromas are projected by spirits.
Clairgustance
Another secondary form of ESP, Clairgustance refers to the ability to taste. While all humans have the ability to taste this type of ESP refers to the ability to taste without putting anything in the mouth. It is thought that those who have this ability can perceive the essence of a particular substance from the spiritual realms through taste.
Automatic Writing
Automatic Writing is the ability to write without consciously realizing that you are. The common believe behind this case for ESP is that the writer is getting his information from supernatural sources. Often times, this type of extrasensory perception has been attributed to Ouija Boards and Planchette. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has also stated his believes on when and how this case of extrasensory perception can occur. I use this in my sessions and it is very helpful to condense the large amount of information I am receiving. I have been doing this since I was around two.
Empathy
Empathy is is the ability to feel what others are feeling much more than the average human would be able to. While humans are known and empathetic towards each other some are so sensitive to the emotions around them that they can suffer a rollercoaster of unknown emotions without any recognition of their source. Many have attributed this to the past live experiences that that entity or soul may have undergone prior to the present life and the experiences of others bring back memories. But many are born this way. It is a genetic disposition to which they are in direct contact with others auric fields and the emotions of others.
Astral Projection
Astral Projection allows you to realize that there are other planes above the physical body we possess and that our body is made up of more than one body. Thanks to Robert Monroe quite a lot of studies have been carried out during altered states of consciousness. Despite disagreements by scientists many believe that extrasensory perception such as Astral Projection does exist. I experienced this spontaneously as a child and into my late twenties. It terrified me because it felt like I was dying. I was told that I had a loose soul. I practice quite a bit of gounding and it doesn’t occur that
Psychometry
Psychometry is the ability to read information from objects. A psychometrist is capable of taking a look at a person’s possession – such as his wallet – and gathering information about the persons past, present or future. This is usually common with mediums or psychist who usually ask for a person’s possession to be read and has be portrayed in countless movies till this day.
Aura Reading
Aura Reading is the ability to read another person’s aura. An aura is a field of energy that persons exudes. It is a common believe that everything, animate or inanimate that can be seen or even captured using Kirlian Photography. The ability to see auras is one of the most common types of extrasensory perception. Mediums can have the ability to see and interpret other peoples aura as they possess an extra body.
Postcognition
This is one of the most used aspects of extrasensory perception by law enforcement agents today. The case for ESP has only been made stronger thanks to the recognition by law enforcement that certain psychics possess the powers to see into events after they have occurred to understand what actually took place. Despite the immense success postcognition has had in criminal investigation, it is still considered by a few to be a hoax or fraud by those who have done extensive research on the case.
The History of ESP
The concept of extra-sensory perception has been a part of many cultures throughout history. Precognition and prophesy have been an important part of many cultures including the Celts of the Scottish Highlands, the Native Americans and the Maori of New Zealand. ESP abilities have also been a part of spiritual development such as in Hinduism which lists clairvoyance as part of one of the siddhis or skills that can be acquired through meditation and discipline.
ESP was reportedly observed in the early days of hypnosis among the followers of Franz Anton Mesmer. Patients put into a trance state were observed to demonstrate telepathic abilities, vision with the fingertips, and clairvoyance. Unlike most parapsychologists the followers of Mesmer believed such abilities to have a physiological cause, not a paranormal one.
As Spiritualism gained popularity in the mid-nineteenth century, more scientists and researchers became interested in psi phenomena. In 1882, the British Society for Psychical Research was founded to study paranormal phenomena like ESP. A few years later, in 1885, the American Society for Psychical Research was founded.
One of the most well-known researchers of ESP was J B Rhine. Beginning in the 1930s, Rhine worked on a number of experiments designed to test for ESP at Duke University in North Carolina. Using sets of Zener cards (often referred to as “ESP cards”), Rhine tested for ESP; results above the chance statistics were attributed to psi phenomena. Dr. Rhine carefully defined terms like “ESP” and “psi,” and continued to research psi phenomena at Duke until his retirement in 1965 when he transferred his research to the Foundation for Research on the Nature of Man. Due at least in part to the work Dr. Rhine and his associates performed parapsychology has become established in other universities.
Scientific Investigation of ESP
Some of the first studies in what would be later termed ESP were conducted by William Barrett in 1881 shortly before he assisted in the founding of the Society for Psychical Research. Barrett investigated the case of the five Creery sisters who were between the ages of ten and seventeen and could apparently use telepathy to psychically identify an object that had been selected in their absence. After sending one sister out of the room Barrett would write the name of an object on a piece of paper which he would then show to the remaining sisters. The first girl was then called back in and usually guessed the name of the object correctly. A second set of experiments was done involving playing cards. It was not until after the investigators had published their results that it was discovered that the girls had used a number of signals, including slight head movements and coughing, to tell their sister what to guess, thereby nullifying the results of the experiments.
In the 1920s, investigator G. N. M. Tyrrell created automated devices to randomize target selection, and others experimented with drawings or token objects. The most well-known results were not found until the 1930’s when J. B. Rhine began his series of experiments. To test ESP Dr. Rhine would use decks of Zener cards consisting of five different designs. In some experiments cards were laid face down for the subject to guess to test clairvoyance in others the researcher would hold the card so that the subject could not see it to test telepathic abilites. Based on the laws of chance it would be expected that participants would be able to guess one out of five symbols correctly but Dr. Rhine found that subjects often exceeded these expectations even if it was only by a small percentage.
The Ganzfeld Experiment
While parapsychologists have been criticized for the card guessing experiments by skeptics they had developed a Ganzfeld (German word for “total field”) experiment during early 1970’s to test for ESP ability. Ganzfeld tests attempt to discern telepathy by separating two individuals into isolated rooms, where one attempts to send a telepathic image to the other. The sender of the message is generally shown either a still image or a short video clip, which he or she then attempts to send to the receiver. The receiver sits in a comfortable reclining chair under a red light, wearing headphones that play white noise or pink noise, and has his or her eyes covered with halves of ping pong balls. These conditions help the receiver enter what is termed the “ganzfeld state,” a trance-like state similar to being in a sensory deprivation chamber. After the sender has attempted to send the image for a set number of time (generally 20 to 40 minutes), the receiver is asked to choose the correct image out of a group of four images. Parapsychologists have collected the results of approximately 700 individual ganzfeld sessions performed by about two dozen investigators, and claim the correct image is selected 34 percent of the time. This increase above the 25 percent that would be expected from chance alone has been cited as proof of the existence of telepathy, although critics point out numerous ways in which ganzfeld experiments may be flawed.
Researchers have found that ESP abilities are apparently heightened under hypnosis. The results of experiments have been found to be consistently higher when subjects are put into a trance state than when they retain normal consciousness. Since hypnosis typically involves relaxation and suggestion in an atmosphere of friendliness and trust, it is thought that perhaps one of these factors, or a combination thereof, may be responsible for heightened psi scores.
The absence of psi ability is also sometimes considered significant. Researchers employ the term “psi-missing” to denote situations where the subject consistently scores below what would be expected by chance. According to experimental results, believers in psi tend to score higher, whereas skeptics often score significantly below chance. This phenomenon referred to as the “Sheep-goat effect” where believers are “sheep” and non-believers are “goats” has been observed by many researchers. Explanations involve the idea that one’s attitudes may affect one’s reality disbelievers may create a void of psi experiences while believers experience the opposite.
Controversies
A great deal of reported ESP is said to occur spontaneously under conditions which are not scientifically controlled. Such experiences have often been reported to be much stronger and more obvious than those observed in laboratory experiments. These anecdotal incidents, rather than laboratory evidence, have served as the basis for the extremely widespread belief in the authenticity of psi phenomena. However, because it has proven extremely difficult (perhaps impossible) to replicate such extraordinary experiences under controlled scientific conditions, skeptics regard them as unproven hearsay. Eyewitness accounts can be flawed; memories tend to be become modified when the experience is spoken about often or when there is emotional involvement in the subject matter; and people may misinterpret anomalous occurrences which, while unusual, may have perfectly normal explanations. While situations with more emotional attachment may have stronger ESP effects (sensing that a loved one has been in a car crash, for example), such situations would be difficult and morally reprehensible to replicate for testing purposes. Strong ESP effects remain anecdotal, and skeptics remain unconvinced of their veracity. Supporters of ESP maintain that the more subtle effects proven in the laboratory support the existence of larger effects.
Proponents of the existence of ESP point to numerous scientific studies that appear to offer evidence of the phenomenon’s existence: the work of parapsychologist J.B. Rhine, and physicists Russell Targ and Harold E. Puthoff in the 1970s are often cited in arguments that ESP exists. Skeptics like James Randi have argued that most of these studies were not conducted with proper scientific controls and that many studies did not adequately protect against fraud or manipulation. Due to the nature of ESP results are also often difficult to replicate even within the same experiment using the same subject and researcher. Parapsychologists call one such effect the “decline effect” which describes how a subject’s initial performance often slowly declines as testing continues perhaps
Developing ESP or Extrasensory Perception:
It is believed that every one of us have the abilities of Extrasensory Perception. It is inherint in our spiritual DNA. It is an unfolding gift that presents itself as situations arise in our lifetime.
Some simple steps to be followed in order to develop your Extrasensory Perception
- Belief:The first and foremost thing you must have is “Belief”. You must believe that you can develop ESP and must affirm yourself that this ability is possible. If you do not believe, then it is impossible for you to develop any psychic abilities.
- Meditate:Spend some time every day to relax. Sit in a comfortable position and do meditation. You can do any meditation that suits you. You can even listen to Bin-aural Beats that enhance your psychic abilities.
- Read:Read variety of books on psychic ability and ESP. Internet is the source of vast information where you can get knowledge by reading articles on psychic abilities.
- Meet People:If possible, meet people with similar interests in your area or find groups in your place and join. You can even have this group while meditating.
- Concentration:Try to sense and see everything that going around you. Be aware of things happening around you. This way, your concentration level will increase and helps to develop your ESP.
- Vibrations:Keep yourself in higher vibrations by thinking always positive and trying to be always happy. Do whatever you like to make you happy without doing any harm to others. Also avoid negative talking.
- Exercise:There are many exercises to do for developing ESP. For example, you can try to predict the card by removing one from a deck of cards. Try to guess who is calling you when you hear your phone ringing, or guessing the person knocking your door, etc. There are many possible ways you can imagine in your daily life for your practice.
- Practice:Practice makes you perfect. Practice different exercises whenever you can. It is better to select one aspect of ESP –Clairvoyance or Telepathy or Precognition, for your practice and later can go further.
- Journal:Keep journal and write your everyday experiences. Tracking your psychic experiences in this way will help you further in developing Extrasensory perception.
- Patience:Developing any psychic ability must require patience, persistence and determination. Never get disappointed if you have some failures initially. Trust yourself and practice till you reach your goal.
Extrasensory Perception is a subject which is very difficult to prove successfully as it defies the laws of physics. But everything that exists is not scientifically proved. There is still debate going on whether ESP is real or not. Though there is no relevant evidence to prove that ESP exist, there is no evidence to prove that debunks it either. With continuing research we may one day discover how these common experience that many of us have add up to the more concrete experiences we have three dimensionally. According to a 2005 Gallup poll 41% of Americans believe in ESP. This is a decline from surveys done in 2001 that found belief in ESP was 50%.
On a personal level I use my gifts in this area heavily in my sessions. It is something that is second nature to me and I don’t question as it has been with me all my life.
Blessings,
Kate
