A lot of people ask me with respect to ghosts, why are spirits more active at nighttime? Ghosts do seem to make their presence known between the hours of 12 pm and 4 am. Most paranormal investigations occur at night because paranormal activity seems to be more active between the hours of midnight and 4 am. This is partly due to the fact that most terrestrial activity is over because most people sleep during the night. Additionally most electrical appliances are not in use. It is easier to detect paranormal activity during the nighttime hours and rule out EMF interference from appliances that are in use. This does not mean that Entities or energies are not active during the daytime hours. They are.
There is also a more scientific reason for paranormal activity to be on the increase during the night. This has to do with the relation of the sun and the earth. Energies that are affiliated with hauntings seem to be electromagnetic in nature. This sun is a large naturally occurring nuclear reactor in the solar system. It is constantly blasting the earth with alpha, gamma, x-ray, and cosmic radiation. Combined together they are known as solar winds. The earth and all of its inhabitants are protected by several protective layers that block approximately 99% of these dangerous rays. One of these layers is called the magnetosphere, which is a magnetic field that radiates from both poles longitudinally in a funnel shape. The interaction of these radiation particles can be seen in the Aurora Borealis otherwise known as The Northern Lights and the Aurora Australis or Southern Lights where the magnetosphere is the thinnest. Beneath the magnetosphere is the ionosphere. This layer reflects the natural electronic magnetic field (EMF) of the Earth radiated back down to the Earth’s surface.
The force of the solar wind compresses the magnetosphere on the side of the Earth facing the sun which also compresses the ionosphere closer to the surface of the Earth causing the Earth’s natural EMF to become more chaotic and bounce back and forth in a small area (visualize when you bounce a ping pong ball with a paddle then bring the paddle closer to the table and the ball bounces fast as the paddle gets closer to the table. As the solar winds get closer to the Earth the magnetosphere and the ionosphere extend outward and away from the planet on the nighttime side. This allows for the Earth’s own magnetic field to expand and become calmer. For proof of this just tune into an AM or CB radio at night. You can pick up stations from all over the country and sometimes distant countries. It is theorized that the spirit world can tap into and tune into the calm, free flowing solar and geomagnetic energies.
To summarize, the solar winds are forcing the electromagnetic fields in towards the Earth on the daylight side so entities do not have to use it to materialize or interact. Whereas on the dark side (facing away from the sun) the EMF is travelling up from the Earth and out into space. This is a perfect environment for any type of spirit that is looking to interact or optimize.
The only exception to this configuration is during a solar eclipse. This happens every eighteen years and lasts approximately 7 minutes. During this event the magnetosphere is equal all around the world, the moon having blocked the solar winds. This time event is considered by most paranormal investigators and mediums to be the highest expression of paranormal presence.
There is a more spiritual or non-scientific reason for the belief that paranormal activity increases at night based upon the Judeo-Christian belief in the inversion of the Christ Hour. Jesus Christ was supposed to have been crucified at 3 PM therefore 3 AM or the anti-crucifixion hour would reflect the opposite or the inversion. It is believed that restless spirits can at this time roam free and create havoc. In the West this is known at “The Witching Hour”. It is originally thought that evil spirits are mocking the Holy Trinity-The Father, The Son and The Holy Ghost. I personally believe that both expressions are at work and co-exist alongside one another.
